Weather in Hawaii can differ from other parts on the island because of elevation. The higher you go, the cooler and rainier it gets. But in general, winters are cooler and rainier than summers. The daily temperature around the coast can average a high of about 83 degrees F and a low around 68 degrees fahrenheit . On the northeastern side constant northeast trade winds cause a plethora of rainfall all year long. The volcanic mountains that have summits that are almost 14,000 feet block the trade winds. This causes the sunny leeward side of the island to be the driest in Hawaii. Hilo (windward) is the rainiest city in the US. It receives about 130 inches of rain per year. Kona (leeward) receives about 28 inches per year. South of Kohala gets less than 10 inches a year. The summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea receive snow every winter. The coldest temperature on Hawaii (1 degree fahrenheit ) was recorded on Mauna Loa. And heavy winter storms on Hilo bring blizzards often to the mountains as low as 9,000 feet.
