Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was founded on August 21, 1916. This park was named international by the United Nations (UN). The park is 333,000 acres. The population of Hawaii is 1.43 million (2015). Hawaii has a GDP of $76.17 billion (2014). The lava flows at an average rate of 800-1,300 gallons per second from vents. More than 500 acres of new land has been added since the eruption started on January 3, 1983. Hawaii is the only United State located in Oceania and composed of only islands.
